Γύρω στα 1800 ό,τι απόμεινε από τους αρχαίους Δελφούς ήταν θαμμένο κάτω από τα ερείπια, που μαζεύτηκαν στο διάβα των αιώνων. Στο μεταξύ χτίστηκε και το χωριό Καστρί επάνω στα ερείπια και έτσι οι ταξιδιώτες εκείνης της εποχής δεν μπορούσαν παρά να αισθανθούν απογοήτευση μπροστά στο ό,τι αντίκριζαν. Κάπου κάπου διακρίνονταν υπολείμματα παλαιών τοίχων, όπως στο μικρό μοναστήρι της Παναγίας που ακουμπούσε στην παλαίστρα του παλιού γυμνασίου ή στο παρεκκλήσι του Προφήτη Ηλία, που είχε χτισθεί στα ερείπια του Σταδίου. Το 1838 άρχισε η συστηματική διερεύνηση των ερειπίων ενώ η ανασκαφή και αποκάλυψη έγινε μόνο το 1892. Με αυτήν την ευκαιρία μεταφέρθηκε το 1902 το Καστρί περίπου δύο χιλιόμετρα δυτικότερα και διακρίνεται αριστερά στο βάθος της εικόνας που ζωγράφισε ο Edward Dodwell.
